Bob’s Discount Carpet, established in 1976 by Bob Pinkham, has been proudly serving Nevada County and the surrounding areas for over 32 years. Bob has been in the flooring business for nearly half a century, starting his career as a carpet installer in 1960 he offers his experience and expertise to all who walk through the door. Having his humble beginnings in the Bay Area, in 1976 he decided that it was time to relocate his family to the peace and beauty offered by the Sierra Nevada Foothills and sold his house, loaded his wife, kids and the dog into the family cruiser moved them all up to Grass Valley. Soon after they had settled-in Bob started looking for a suitable retail front and upon locating 1,600 sq ft on Joerschke Dr. he opened Bob’s Discount Carpet to the general public. It didn’t take long to outgrow the meager 1,600 sq ft space and it was decided that it made good business sense to take over 3 more bays, expanding the business to 6,400 sq. ft.
Keeping it in the family also seemed to make sense, and Bob’s three sons Robert, Todd and Kurt learned the business and worked as installers throughout much of the last 33 years. Kurt decided that he had a knack for the flooring industry and in the early 1980’s with the dream of one day building their own flooring outlet and quite a bit of foresight he bought property at the corner of Idaho Maryland and Sutton Way on Golden Gate Terrace. Many ups and downs, quite a few growing pains and 25 or so years later Kurt could see the writing on the wall...it was time to develop and build the Golden Gate Terrace location. Permit pitfalls and retaining wall woes became the order of the day for the next 2 years. The budget was revised and increased repeatedly and though at times it was hard to see just how this dream would ever come true, Kurt persevered. Today, almost 2 1/2 years and twice the budget later the facility at 995 Golden Gate Terrace is a sight to see. This new state-of-the-art facility has all the bells and whistles. The many amenities include wireless internet throughout, a new sound system, a security system to be envied, energy efficiency (including solar) that far surpasses expectation, a beautiful sales and display floor, and a more than ample warehouse replete with racking and storage that will allow for growth and product expansion for many years to come. In addition to business sense Kurt has an keen eye for style and surrounds himself with items both precious and beautiful, a fact that presents itself to customers as they walk in and see not only the beautiful original paintings by local artist Maxine Ferry displayed throughout, but the polished precious stones and oversized gems on display as well.
Bob’s Discount Carpet has always been the largest and best stocked privately owned flooring dealer in Nevada County, and arguably the Sierra Nevada Foothills, making it possible for them to offer both the most competitive pricing and the largest selection in the greater Grass Valley/Nevada County area. Bob, Kurt and Bill are still the familiar faces you can expect to see behind the counter and in the warehouse running the new Golden Gate Terrace facility, but with growth comes the need for additional personnel.
